Der vorliegende Band enthält die Erstedition des Evangelienkommentars des Bischofs Fortunatian von Aquileia (Mitte 4. Jh.). Dieses Werk, von dem erst 2012 eine annähernd vollständige Handschrift identifiziert werden konnte, ist der älteste aus der lateinischen Antike erhaltene Evangelienkommentar und daher von eminenter Bedeutung für die Patristik. Der kritischen Edition des Texts ist eine ausführliche Einleitung vorangestellt. This volume contains the first edition of the commentaries on the gospels by Bishop Fortunatianus of Aquileia (mid-4th century). This work, which was only discovered in the form of an almost complete manuscript in 2012, is the oldest preserved commentary on the gospels from Latin antiquity, and therefore of extraordinary significance for patristics. The critical edition of the text includes a detailed introduction.

Die Studie verbindet eine historische Einordnung der von 200 n. Chr. stammenden Verhaltensanweisungen für das tägliche Leben wohlhabender Christen und deren Verfasser mit einer Untersuchung des darin vermittelten Verhältnisses zum Körper: Fern von Leibfeindlichkeit verdeutlichen gesundheitsorientierte Normen die legitime Sorge für den Körper. Dennoch gibt es eine Furcht vor dem Körper, die dessen stete Kontrolle erforderlich macht. Pluspunkte gehört in den aktuell intensiv erforschten Bereich der "Zweiten Sophistik" verbindet historische, philologische, theologische Methoden und Erkenntnisse relevant auch für Medizinhistoriker The author examines the historical context of instructions for the everyday conduct of prosperous Christians and the authors of these instruction manuals from 200 AD and links this examination with a study of attitudes towards the human body as revealed in the instructions. The volume shows how, far from denying the body, the standards relating to health display a legitimate concern for bodily well-being. At the same time, however, there is a fear of the body, which makes it necessary to keep it constantly under control. Ce volume constitue les actes d’un colloque organisé à l’ENS de Lyon (19-20 janvier 2012) pour mettre à l’honneur ce poète oublié, dans des échanges pluridisciplinaires autour de cette œuvre très peu lue en dehors d’un cercle restreint de spécialistes. En réunissant les contributions de philologues, historiens de l’art et historiens des idées, ce volume s’efforce d’enrichir le commentaire des fragments et tente de comprendre les usages que ce poète a faits de la matière mythologique dans une perspective politique ou pour rendre compte du monde dans lequel il évoluait. La première partie de l’ouvrage propose deux parcours géographiques pour donner une idée du traitement du mythe par Euphorion, allant d’abord au sein de la Grèce traditionnelle d’Eubée en Béotie et de l’Attique en Corinthie, puis parcourant l’Asie mineure et le Proche-Orient où Euphorion a fait lui-même une partie de sa carrière. La seconde partie plus littéraire essaie de mettre en lumière certains aspects propres de la poétique d’Euphorion au sein d’un ensemble de poètes qui recherchent l’obscurité, l’étrange ou la rareté et dans l’art spécifique de la malédiction.

St Jerome (ca. 347-419), translator and prolific commentator on the Old Testament, left a lasting and controversial mark on the history of biblical scholarship through his radical return to the hebraica veritas , the 'Hebrew truth.' Yet, the extent of Jerome’s Hebrew knowledge has been debated, and the actual role of Hebrew in Jerome’s biblical exegesis has been little explored. This book shows how Jerome’s Hebrew philology developed out of his training in classical literary studies, describes the nature of Jerome’s command of Hebrew in light of his historical context and his use of Jewish sources, and explains how Jerome used Hebrew scholarship in his biblical interpretation. Jerome emerges as a competent Hebraist, limited by his context, yet producing work of enduring significance.

Books 6–10 of Cyril of Alexandria’s (c. 380–444 CE) monumental work of refutation “Against Julian” are being published for the first time in a modern critical edition with an extensive apparatus of sources and parallel texts. In addition, the volume includes all known Greek and Syriac fragments from the lost volumes as well as an extensive introduction to the transmission of the fragments. Die monumentale Widerlegung "Gegen Julian" des Erzbischofs von Alexandrien, Kyrill (ca. 380–444 n.Chr.), zählt zu den wichtigsten Dokumenten für die geistigen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Heiden und Christen in der Spätantike, einer häufig mit der Gegenwart verglichenen Umbruchzeit. Kyrill unternimmt darin den Versuch, die Argumente, die der vormals selbst christlich erzogene Kaiser Julian (361–363) in seiner angriffigen Streitschrift "Gegen die Galiläer" im Anschluss an frü¬here heidnische Intellektuelle gegen das Christentum vorgebracht hatte und die offensichtlich noch weit über dessen Tod hinaus unter Christen wie Nichtchristen keine geringe Wirkung entfalteten, Punkt für Punkt zu entkräften. Die Bücher 6-10 sowie alle bekannten griechischen und syrischen Fragmente dieser nicht nur für die Rekonstruktion von Julians Schrift "Gegen die Galiläer" fundamentalen Apologie werden hier erstmals in einer modernen kritischen Edition veröffentlicht. Eine ausführliche Einleitung stellt den Stand der Erforschung der komplexen Fragmentenüberlieferung dar.
